Circulation & Reserves

Checking Out Materialsstudent locating a library book

To check out materials, students must have a MAVCard which is presented at the Circulation Desk at the time of check-out. Loan periods are as follows:

  • Books and maps from the Main and GovDocs collections circulate for three weeks. These may be renewed for one additional three week period if no hold has been placed on them.
  • Media may be checked out for two hour in-library use.
  • Reserve material check-out periods vary according to the designation established by the faculty member placing them on reserve.
  • Some library materials are limited to in-library use only. Reference books, Special Collection materials and periodicals are a few examples. Anyone may use these materials as long as library rules and regulations are observed.

Fines for Overdue Materials

There is a five day grace period during which overdue materials can be returned, however, if not returned within this time period, the fine is retroactive to the end of the original three week loan period. Should circulating materials not be returned by the due date, there will be a fine of $0.25 per day per item to a maximum of $10.00 per item. Should the material be lost the maximum fine plus a replacement/processing fee will be assessed for a total cost of $100.00 per item.

Reserves

Course reserve items are selected by instructors to supplement class lectures.

Only one reserve item per patron may be checked out at a time. No holds can be placed on reserve material, and there are no renewals on reserve check-outs. Periods of time that materials may be put on reserve:

  • 1-Day and 2-Day materials may be checked out of the library at any time of day to be returned at the same time on the date due. Materials must be returned to the drop box on the outside of the building if the library is closed on the date due.
  • 3-Day materials may be checked out at any time and are due back at the same time on the date due. Again, materials must be returned to the drop box on the outside of the building if the library is closed on the date due.
  • 2-Hour Library Use materials may not leave the library (Not even when the library is closed holidays, nights and weekends).
  • Media items (video tapes, cassette tapes, CD's,...) check out for two hour in-library use only. Media items may be checked out for 5 days by faculty members only. Walkman's and CD players are only intended for listening to reserve material and do not check out on their own. They check out for two hours with any reserve tape or CD.

Colorado Library Card

The John U. Tomlinson Library honors the Colorado Library Card (CLC) program for Colorado residents eighteen and older who present a current library card from their home library with the CLC designation and a Colorado driver's license or a Colorado picture ID as proof of Colorado residency.

To check out materials from the library, a CLC borrower must fill out and sign a registration form at the Circulation desk in the library. A Mesa State College Library bar-code will be attached to the borrower's library card. Checkouts are limited to a total of two (2) books per patron. This includes materials previously charged and not yet returned. Books may be checked out for one three-week period with no renewals. Because of the quantity, nature of, and demand for Bestseller books, these materials may not be checked out by CLC borrowers. The Tomlinson Library also requires that a CLC borrower be in good standing at his/her home library.
