Periodical Management

What is a periodical?
A publication issued at regular intervals (i.e., daily, monthly, or quarterly) and intended to continue indefinitely.  Common examples are newspapers, magazines and journals.

What does does Tomlinson Library's Periodical Department do?

  • Checks in all periodical issues
  • Manages on-line holdings records for 2,293 periodical titles
  • Sends books and periodicals to the bindery
  • Participates in replacement services of missing issues of periodicals

How can a patron of the library find out what periodical titles the library owns?
Holdings information is available online through the Library Catalog.

How do patrons determine if the library has received current issues for a particular periodical title?
The most current issue the library has received is shown in the catalog as "Latest Received:".  The status of other recent issues can be displayed by clicking on the "Latest Received" link.

How do patrons determine if a particular issue is at the bindery?
Click on the "Latest Received" link.  If an issue is at the bindery, its status will display as "TO BIND".  An issue with the status "BND PREP" will usually, though not always, be available to use.  Ask for help at the Reference Desk.

How can a patron of the library find full-text articles and e-journals for particular periodical titles?
The best way is to search the Journal Finder.

How can I contact someone in the Periodicals Department?
Call or email Judy 970.248.1091 or jmaki@mesastate.edu

Reporting Problems With the Library Catalog
It is important that the summary holdings statements in the Library Catalog be correct. An error in the summary holdings statement may mean that patrons will not be able to find the material they need. In the Library Catalog, you can just e-mail the citation with the error to Jamie Walker. Please indicate in the comments what is wrong with the statement.
