Audition Information

All incoming freshmen or transfer students must audition to be considered for scholarships and to gain admission into the Bachelor of Arts program in Acting/Directing, Music Theatre, and Dance. Although it is not required, Technical Theatre/Design students are strongly encouraged to interview for admission and scholarship consideration.

NOTE: MESA STATE COLLEGE WILL ALSO HAVE REPRESENTATIVES AT THE COLORADO THESPIAN CONFERENCE AUDITIONS IN DECEMBER, SO IT IS POSSIBLE TO AUDITION FOR OUR ACTING/DIRECTING, MUSIC THEATRE, AND TECHNICAL THEATRE/DESIGN PROGRAMS AT THAT TIME.

12:00 Lunch with students and faculty: Mesa Experimental Theatre (MET)
1:00 Attend class with MSC students
2:00 Audition workshop
4:00 Free time
7:30 Attend MSC production of AN ABSOLUTE TURKEY (November) or THE PRODUCERS (March)

Saturday

10:00 Warm-up: practice rooms available
11:00 Auditions/Interviews: MET

General Information:

1. To schedule an audition/interview, contact Richard R. Cowden at rcowden@mesastate.edu at least one week prior to your audition.

2. Students unable to attend both days may still audition on Saturday. It is strongly recommended, however, that students try to attend both days in order to get a more complete picture of life as a Mesa State theatre major.
3. All students must bring a current resume, head shot, current high school transcript, and two letters of recommendation.
4. Students auditioning for the Acting/Directing concentration should prepare two contrasting monologues (one classical and one contemporary) of one minute.
5. Students auditioning for the Music Theatre concentration should prepare two contrasting song phrases of approximately 16 bars (one up-tempo and one ballad, both from musicals) and also bring clothing suitable for a brief dance audition.
6. Students who wish to interview for the Technical Theatre/Design concentration may also schedule an interview time on these dates. These students should bring portfolios containing any samples of their work (photographs, audio, or video along with drawings and/or drafting).
7. Students unable to attend both days may still audition on Saturday. It is strongly recommended, however, that students try to attend both days in order to get a more complete picture of life as a Mesa State theatre major.

Thursday, October 8 & Thursday, April 22

Students wishing to audition for admission into the MSC dance program or scholarships must attend at least two of the following classes:

9-10:15am-Beginning Jazz
10:30-11:45am-Beginning Modern
12:30-1:45pm-Beginning Ballet
2-3:15pm-Intermediate/Advanced Jazz
3:30-5pm-Intermediate/Advanced Ballet

In addition, personal interviews for scholarships will be scheduled throughout the day.

Scholarship Opportunities

Students interested in scholarship opportunities are highly encouraged to attend our annual Dance Day on April 24. Scholarship seeking students should bring a prepared solo (3 minutes or less). Schedule for that day is as follows:

9-10am-Breakfast, Meet & Greet
10-11:15am-Technique Class
11:30-1pm-Scholarship Auditions (prepared solos)
1-2pm-Lunch on your own
2-3:15pm-Hip Hop Class (optional)
7:30pm-MSC Dance Performance (dance day attendees receive one comp ticket)

If you are unable to attend these dates, but would still like to be considered for admission and scholarships, video auditions will be accepted.
