High School Programs

High School Programs in Career and Technical Education

Through a partnership with Mesa County Valley School District 51, qualified high school juniors and seniors enroll in classes at WCCC and earn elective credit toward high school graduation. Bus transportation is provided between District 51 high schools and Western Colorado Community College. Students do not pay for tuition or textbooks.

WCCC's high school programs provide an application based curriculum in a hands-on laboratory environment. Classes emphasize both technical skills and academic knowledge. Expert faculty and support from industry advisory committees assure the delivery of high quality programs.

Anmiantion

Join the exciting new field of 3D Animation. Students learn basic animation techniques using three dimensional software. Program concepts include modeling, lighting, motion, character building, scene creation, environment manipulation and visual effects. Gain skills in problem solving and creative thinking.

Use your passion for video games and movies to explore a fascinating and fun career.

Upon successful completion of this course, students may earn Mesa State College credits.

 

CAD

Students learn basic drafting principles and methods in hand drafting and computer-aided design, drafting concepts, architectural theory, pictorial drawing, dimensioning and geometric construction and techniques are explored by hand and with CAD software and equipment.

Computers and CAD software are the drafting and engineering tools of today. Drafters use CAD for architectural, mechanical, and civil engineering as well as a variety of other fields such as animation and interior design.

Upon successful completion of this course, students may earn Mesa State College credits.

 

Graphic Communications

Graphic Communications introduces students to the creative, technical, and commercial aspects of an industry that currently employs over two million people.

Students gain basic skills in creative thinking, layout and design, topography, desktop publishing, teamwork, and creative art.

Students will gain an understanding of career opportunities in graphics and related fields as well as learning how to work with others and grow personally. Specific projects in portfolio design and resume development are included.


AMchining

This course prepares students for entry-level placement in a wide range of manufacturing jobs and is designed to meet competency-based standards set by industry.

Students learn blueprint reading, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, general machining, inspection processes, maintenance, computer-aided design (CAD), and related mathematics.

Classroom instruction is integrated with related lab work on project-based activities using tools and equipment found in manufacturing jobs. This program stresses quality workmanship and a positive attitude.

Upon successful completion of this course, students may earn Mesa State College credits.

 

 

Marketing

The marketing program is designed to apply marketing principles and processes to any industry including: Sports and Entertainment, Fashion and Merchandising, Finance, Automotive, Restaurant Management, and Business Ownership.

Exercises, case studies and activities in this course give students real-world experience. Students leave the marketing program with the skills critical to succeed in college and become leaders in the work place.

Students with a B or better each quarter of their Marketing Education class may receive three semester hours per year of transferable credits from the Mesa State College School of Business.


 

Media Tech

This program prepares students for entry into the exciting field of video production with an emphasis on long form, narrative storytelling through video. Students learn script writing, audio and video production, and special effects. The course also overviews commercial production.

From putting work on YouTube to learning about film theory, this course introduces students to the field of visual imaging and production.

In addition to personal growth and the ability to work cooperative with others, students will gain and understanding on career opportunities in media and communication fields.

Med Prep

Explore the many career opportunities in the medical field while developing skills and gaining knowledge of medical concepts.

Students earn CPR and First Aid certificates, learn medical terminology and experience job shadows in community health care facilities. Students must provide their own transportation for job shadowing.

This program prepares students to continue pursuing their education in any health-related occupation.

Technology Integration

Students learn fundamentals of Inter-Networking Systems of Telecommunications and Process Systems Control Technology. Technicians in these fields repair and run the computers that control the networks and systems that run the world.


Through the Cisco Certified Networking Academy and Process Technologies the students explore the Networking for Home and Small Business; PC Hardware and Software; Introduction to Process Systems; Safety, Health and Environment; and Introduction to Systems Instrumentation.

Upon successful completion of this course, students may earn Mesa State College credits.

 

 

 

Transportation Services

Students learn the fundamentals of electronics, starters, ignition and charging systems, and cooling and heating systems. Explore related math concepts, use of technical manuals, basic management skills, communication skills, and leadership. This program stresses safety practices. Students learn proper use and care of hand tools and equipment used in the automotive service industry.

Advanced course work is a continuation and in-depth study of internal combustion engine disassembly, repair, reassembly, diagnosis and troubleshooting, suspension systems, alignment and wheel balance. Included are electrical systems and tune-up of late model fuel and emission control systems.

Upon successful completion of this course, students may earn Mesa State College credits.

 

 

 

Welding

This program offers the opportunity to become proficient at:

  • Stick welding (SMAW)
  • MIG welding (GMAW)
  • TIG welding (GTAW)
  • Flux-core welding (FCAW)
  • Oxyacetylene cutting and welding (OFC-A/OAW)

Through classroom lecture and related lab work, students study welding, cutting, layout, fabrication and technical math. A good attitude and quality workmanship is stressed.

This course prepares students for entry-level placement in a wide range of jobs in a variety of fields and is designed to meet competency-based standards set by industry.
